President Barak Obama pulled back from the threshold of greatness to become merely our most elocuent and intelligent politician. He remains beholden to the Pentagon, the National Security establishment, the giant corporations and their academic Nomenklatura, counting on them for the critical advice and sacrificing our commitments to international and constitutional law for a cynical pragmatism. Congress is a hard nut to crack, but there are things he can do as president without Congress: forbid torture and rendition, assassination, investigate the war criminals who are "too big to jail", stop warrantless surveillance, desist from trying to overthrow foreign governments, stop harboring terrorists...He wanted to be another Lincoln-- but without a Frederick Douglass.
